Senior pets often get overlooked at shelters when it comes to adoptions but there are numerous benefits in adopting an older pet. For example, they may be already trained and housebroken. They also have a more calming influence than the typical rambunctious puppy or kitten.
Dogs and cats are typically considered senior anywhere from 7 to 11 years of age. As a generally accepted guideline, WAIF establishes a senior at 8 years of age but that’s almost midlife considering how long a cat or dog can live. Cats have the potential to live up to 20 years of age and a dog up to 16. So you can see, senior pets have plenty of years to be a loving companion in a forever home!
